Yesterday on Thursday 5 April, 14 young carers enjoyed a trip to Tamworth Snowdome as part of the Easter activities arranged by Worcestershire Young Carers, a service delivered by West Mercia charity YSS.

The young carers tried their hand at tobogganing and ice skating, and were accompanied by keyworkers Lucy Buckland and Vicky Parker.

Vicky said: “Many of the young carers we work with have huge responsibilities, such as administering medication, parenting younger siblings, cooking, washing and bathing or providing emotional support. It was really brilliant to see everyone having so much fun and enjoying themselves away from their caring roles and responsibilities.”

Worcestershire Young Carers is a service that has been successfully delivered by YSS since 2003. It provides one-to-one support, assessment and signposting to young people aged between seven and 25 who have a caring role at home. Regular clubs and activities are also part of the service and take place regularly throughout the year. As well as tobogganing and ice skating, so far this year young carers have enjoyed a trip to see Great Expectations at the theatre and also visited the pantomime to watch a performance of Aladdin. Highlights in the upcoming events calendar include horse riding, a drama workshop and a trip to the annual Young Carers Festival.

Lorraine Preece, Chief Executive at YSS, said: “I’m delighted that the young carers had such a brilliant time at Tamworth Snowdome! We are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated to YSS to support young carers, making these activities possible, which are so important in providing young carers the opportunity to have new and fun experiences away from their caring roles.”
